Anatomy
Large semi-aquatic predators Megathylans have powerful front flippers that allow them some degree of mobility on land and help with steering in the water. Their back legs have fused to create a large fluke that propels them through the water. They have a thick later of blubber that keeps them warm as well as protected against attacks.
Both males and females grow long tusks when they reach adulthood, a male's dorsal fin grows taller then females but there is very little distinction between the sexes.

Intelligence
Megathylans are highly intelligent and have been seen setting traps for their prey. They also have some ability to understand and communicate with other species around them.
In the wild
Megathylan are almost solely found in the cold climate of the southern hemisphere where they live in family groups known as pods and can be highly territorial. Many adults have scars from fighting with other pods for territory or food rights.
Diet
A Megathylan's diet is mostly fish and small aquatic creatures however they are not picky and will hunt most everything in the water, even if it's larger then them. It is not uncommon for them to go after Ascalabote mares and lone Ascalabote frigus.
Family
Megathylan pods are very close and are almost solely female, with males either on the fringe or living completely alone. In the frost season when the southern hemisphere gets warmer Megathylan gather together in large numbers on the beach of the southern continent to breed, males will stake out claims on parts of the beach and the female pods will arrive later and chose which males they prefer. Pods may split up during this time, joining with several males before reconnecting after the frost season.
Gestation is roughly a year long and one cub is born right before the frost season begins. The cub will stay with it's mother and any other females with cubs for the frost season, staying far away from the beaches claimed by males.
Male Megathylan will begin to leave their mother's pod at roughly 20 years, females will often stay with their birth pod for life.
