The arquus and mediocris split
When Ascalabotes first evolved, they were a rainbow of colors. No two Ascalabotes had the same colors and they were deeply connected to the mana of Senluna. Over time Ascalabotes began to spread out more and more from their mountain home, losing their connection to the mana as well as losing their rainbow colors. This split the one species into two, the old Ascalabote arquus and the new Ascalabote mediocris. Without their close connection to the mana, the mediocris couldn’t create portals easily or naturally focus their mana and over time the arquus began to see themselves as the better species so retreated further into the mountains and being better suited for living on the savanna and plains on Senluna, the mediocris left the mountains furthering separating the species until Ascalabote arquus where nothing more then myths to Ascalabote mediocris.
the Mediocris lose their mana
While it took more time for the mediocris to learn to control their mana, it still helped them survive and thrive as a society. Though trouble was brewing, like with the Ascalabote arquus family groups were left to regulate themselves with trade between groups common and helped keep the peace as everyone always had what they needed. A mediocris called Cladis didn’t like this, he wanted power over all the Ascalabotes but he was young and no match for any of the older Ascalabotes who kept him from his power, he was sure that if he was the only mediocris with the ability to use mana that he would be able to take the power he wanted so he journeyed into the mountains where he found one of the last nearby arquus and asked him for help. The arquus was happy to help Cladis as by then the arquus had begun to believe they were the better of the two Ascalabote species and that while the mediocris still had a connection to the mana the arquus couldn’t be completely superior. Together they came up with a mixture that when rubbed on someone's paws would disconnect them from Senluna’s mana. Bringing the salve back Cladis wove lies about it helping cure pain or help with injuries. It was a success and quickly the salve was traded among the mediocris families and after a few years everyone started to notice that they could no longer use mana like they once had but no one ever made the connection to Cladis or the salve. Cladis was able to take power like he wanted but was soon overthrown by an even more bloodthirsty Ascalabote and slowly the society of the mediocris fell apart and with it every last idea of mana and how to use it.
The clans are formed
When Ascalabote mediocris first started to live on the plains and savannas it was a bloody and ruthless time. Without the same structure the arquus had, the mediocris quickly fell apart into primitive tribes that were constantly fighting. It took the near death of a brave warrior called Privus to unite these tribes into a new society. Telling the story of when he had come close to dying he saw two Ascalabotes watching him, they looked different but he knew they were unified and needed each other. Slowly other tribes began to follow his lead, forming the first clan they called the Reilo clan. As the Reilo clan continued to grow as more and more tribes joined and as the population flourished, Privus gathered his four most trusted friends and told them to split their territory into five pieces where five clans could live, his four friends would rule their own clans and Privus would rule all five. His friends agreed and so the territory was split and gave rise to the four new clans, the Vesper clan, the Aquilo clan, the Ortis clan, and the Auster clan.
However this gave rise to a new problem, the new clans were small so not all the clans had Ascalabotes to do what was needed for the clan to thrive and with the split up clans, young Ascalabotes couldn’t learn everything they needed. Chichk, the leader of the Auster clan, came up with an idea. She proposed that the young Ascalabotes meet at the Reilo clan where they were given a test of their skills and with those results the Ascalabotes could be sent to the clans that needed them the most. This became the Ludicium and over time it grew more and more challenging and dangerous.
Careers were also added to the clans, an Ascalabote was put in a career after they survived the Ludicum and they were permanently stuck in that career even if it was something they hated and the only way to get out of it was to be unable to be a functioning member of that career.
Though life was no longer a bloody battle for survival, the society wasn’t flourishing as much as Privus had hoped and he lived to see his and his friends’ ideas become something told in whispers away from pups but he perished before he was able to do anything to mend his mistakes.
Pergro discovers portal jumping
Many, many generations after the clans were first formed there was a curious young Ascalabote from the Aquilo clan called Pergro. Pergro was always testing his limits, wanting to see what he was capable of. He had heard the stories of the mythical rainbow colored Ascalabotes that could bend the elements around them and even open up windows to other places. He wanted to be like those rainbow Ascalabotes. In his efforts he learned that tangled in the roots of a Cortex was a mass of metallic material that could be molded into shapes with heat but only once and once it stiffened it was nearly unbreakable. Pergro told his leader, Kanix, about his discovery and while the leader didn’t believe him at first Pergro was able to dig up enough proof that Kanix couldn’t deny the discovery. Pregro wasn’t done with his discoveries, he learned that the small creatures called Terraveums could be tamed with seeds and he even ventured into the foothills of the mountains and found crystals that sparkled with energy. Not all of his discoveries were believed however, he said that he had seen Ascalabotes in the Cresces and that a he traded with what he described as an Ascalabote covered in Moshkh and spoke in a very slow manor neither of those stories were ever believed and with many other similarly wild stories Pergro was outcast from his clan. It wasn’t until he became a Vigilate in the Ortis clan did he make the discovery that he is most famous for.
The exact story has been lost over time and now it changes from teller to teller but the basics are still able to be gleaned from the stories.
It was the middle of the dry season’s week of lights and Pergro was patrolling around camp when suddenly he felt a strange pull to the nearby Cresces forest. Try as he might, he couldn't ignore the pull and so in the middle of the night he followed it deeper and deeper into the forest until every last star had disappeared from the sky. He started to see movement in the shadows, eyes that glowed in their own light watched him but the strange pull kept leading him deeper. Suddenly a white Ascalabote seemed to materialize out of nowhere in a flash of purple light, they stared at him with eyes that seemed to reflect the galaxy. Pergro and the strange Ascalabote stared at each other until a sound of either a twig or his name being called snapped Pergro from the trance and he turned to see either his pup or his wife who had followed him into the forest. Suddenly there was a great crack and a large branch from the Cresce above the Ascalabote who followed Pergro started to fall. In a moment of panic, Pergro raced towards his family member but gravity was faster, with his heart racing and every strand of fuzz standing on end, Pergro suddenly felt a strange feeling rise from his paws to the top of his head. Looking forwards he saw his family member, but closer and distorted in a haze. Racing forwards he found himself right next to his family member and was able to get them to safety before the branch crashed down. The white Ascalabote was nowhere to be seen and his family member told him that he had disappeared into purple smoke before reappearing in the same purple smoke.
Pergro spent the rest of his life trying to figure out the ins and outs of portal creation. He learned that the more fuzz an Ascalabote has the easier it was to create a portal. That portals did more then transport an Ascalabote to nearby places but could reach across oceans and even to Pual.
When the Reilo Leader heard of this discovery they banned its use because it was dangerous however they also banished Pergro from all the clans and for a while it was even forbidden to speak about portal creations. There were whispers in the clans that Pergro had discovered something the leaders wanted to hide.
